Asian Solidarity Economy Council (ASEC)

Asian Solidarity Economy Council co-founded with Dr Ben Quinones Philippines and Pak Bambang of Indonesia and Denison Jayasoria, Malaysia.
It is a network of local and national organisations in Asia with a strong representation from ASEAN countries. The focus of these organisations is to develop SSE programmes at the ground level as well as policy advocacy for social justice in the economic field.

PERSATUAN PROMOSI HAK ASASI MANUSIA (PROHAM)

This society was established by former members of SUHAKAM, the human rights commission as a way of continuing the work. It was founded on 10 March 2011 for the promotion of human rights in Malaysian society.
Denison was part of the founding team of the society and was elected to serves as Secretary General from 2011 to 2016. This work is well documented.

2011 to 2016: Elected Secretary General of

Denison served as Secretary General for two terms and was very active on human rights concerns.
Denison Jayasooria (2017) Championing Human Rights – PROHAM through the years (2011-2016), captured most of PROHAM’s advocacy work.

Malaysian CSO-SDG Alliance

Malaysian CSO SDG Alliance was formed in Oct 2015 after the UN launch the SDGs in Sept 2015. The Alliance is a network of CSOs working in economic, social and environmental concerns.It played a major role in policy advocacy with the government in localising SDGs working with the Economic Planning Unit (EPU). It facilitated the formation of the APPGM SDG through a series of conversations with the Parliament speaker in mid 2019. The work is coordinated by two elected Co chairs from the Alliance members and they focus on SDG policy advocacy matters and make representation to government on SDG related matters.

From Oct 2015 to June 2022 Denison Jayasooria served as the co-chair of the Alliance movement of CSOs.

All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia for Sustainable Development Goals
(APPGM-SDG)

The All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on Sustainable development goals (APPGM-SDG) was established after a series on conversations with the Speaker of Parliament in Mid 2019. Parliament in Oct 2019 approved the establishment of the APPGM-SDGs as the first and an announcement of Denison Jayasooria as the Head of the Secretariate.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Legal Affairs Datuk Liew Vui Keong said in Parliament:-
“Pioneering this group, the House Committee has approved the establishment of the APPGM on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The secretariat will be chaired by Professor Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria, who is also the co-chairman of The Malaysian CSO-SDG Alliance,”

Society for the Promotions of SDG (SDG Society)

The SDG society was registered with the Registrar of Societies on 7th January 2020 as the legal entity serving as the secretariate for the APPGM SDG and the Malaysian CSO SDG Alliance. It received and managed the funding from the Ministry of Finance via Parliament since 2020, over four years (2020 -2023). The SDG Society also employs all the APPGM SDG staff and enters into agreement with local solution partners on SDG solution projects and with academics on mapping and research work undertaken.
On funding we stated with an allocation of RM1.6million in the pilot phase (2020) and now in 2023 Ministry of Finance has allocated RM30 million. We are now involved in 85 parliamentary constituencies. Staffing in 2020 was just two full time staff and now in 2023 it is about 35 full time staff.
mysdg academy

Established under the SDG society and APPGM SDG secretariat as the training arm. We noted that many at the grassroots have very little knowledge of the SDGs including front line civil service.
With funds allocated from the Ministry of Finance we undertake SDG awareness and capacity building programs at the district /parliamentary levels.

mySDG Centre for Social Inclusion

Established under the SDG Society and APPGM SDG, this is the policy research and advocacy team. The centre undertakes second level, research after the completion of the mapping exercise at the constituency level. To date the APPGM SDG secretariat has undertaken 85 field studies in 85 parliamentary constituencies between 2020 and 2023.
The policy research team documents the mapping of local needs and also undertakes a second level of situational analysis and case studies on specific economic, social and environmental concerns in Malaysian society.
