Prof. Datuk. Dr. Denison Jayasooria was born on 3rd September 1954 in Banting Kuala Langat, Selangor. His grandparents migrated from Sri Lanka in 1910 and he has a Sri Lankan Tamil heritage. He studied at the Methodist English Primary School from 1961 to 1966 and secondary from 1967 to 1972. He was a School Captain and Head Perfect, in Form Six at Vanto Academy PJ. Later on he pursued a Bachelor of Divinity at Union Biblical Seminary, Yeotmal and degree was from Serampore College (University), India in 1981. His first job was with the Methodist Church (TAC), Taiping and Tg Malim from 1981 June to 1986 May.
